Badavalinga
Situated just near (adjacent) to Narasimha temple Badavilinga temple has largest monolithic (single rock) Shiv Linga in Hampi.
This huge(collosal) Linga is made of black stone which is 3m in height. This Linga is three eyed. It is situated in a ceiling less small chamber. Thus the Linga gets natural sunlight. This small chamber has an opening in front. A canal(water channel) flows through this chamber that's why one always find Shiv Linga half submurged in water.
Etymology (Word Derivation)
The word Badavilinga is genuinely Combination of two words - Badva which means 'Poor' in local tongue 'Kannada', whereas Linga represents Lord 'Shiva'.If legends are followed then it is believed that it is commissioned by a poor peasant woman, this way it got the name 'BadavaLinga'.
